RULES FOR BRITANNICA AWARDS (“AWARDS”):

Every year, Britannica will celebrate a select number of students and educators who have made a difference, or made an impact in their school, and/or community. Nominations will be accepted from students who are at least 18 years of age or educators. Nominations can be for others (high school students or educators) or can be self-nominations.

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED. Nominations accepted from individuals who are eighteen (18) years of age or older at the time of entry who are legal residents of the fifty (50) United States of America or the District of Columbia. By entering the awards as described in these Rules, entrants represent and warrant that they are complying with these Rules (including, without limitation, all eligibility requirements), and that they agree to abide by and be bound by all the rules and terms and conditions stated herein and all decisions of Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. (the “Sponsor”), which shall be final and binding.

To qualify as an educator, they must

  • Be an educator (Teacher, Librarian, Principal) in a Public, Private or parochial school in the 50 United States of America or the District of Columbia.
  • Be an educator for more than 3 years
  • Be in good standing with school
  • Be a full time faculty member
  • Teach or work with students in K-12.
  • Have school permission to enter*

To qualify as student award, they must

  • Enrolled and attend a Public, Private or parochial school within the 50 United States or the District of Columbia
  • Be a High School Student
  • Attend school full time
  • Be in good standing with school

HOW TO ENTER:

Submissions will only be accepted through our online entry system which you can access through judgify.me/BritannicaAwards-2019

You must register on the site and log in to submit. Your submission will comprise of three open ended questions along with supporting documentation as well as an optional video submission.

Only one submission will be allowed per student or educator per year.


WINNER SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION:

Call for submissions will begin in January 1, 2019 accepted through April 1, 2019.

All entries will be reviewed, selected and judged from selected Britannica employees and selected judges from external partnering institutions. Finalists and semi-finalists will be chosen by judges from external partnering institutions.

All judging processes will be done confidentially and privately and no external voting will be included in the final winner selection. The decision of the judges will be final.

The Award honorees will be announced by June 2019 and awards and any cash/prize value will be presented to the Honorees by August 2019


PRIZE VALUE

  • 2 finalists will be selected, one educator and one student.
    • Educator Finalist will be awarded a one time grand cash value of $10,000.
    • Student Finalist will be awarded a one-time grand cash value of $5,000.
  • 10 Semi-finalists will be selected, 5 educators and 5 students.
    • 5 Educator Semi-Finalists will be selected and each awarded a one time cash value of $1,000
    • 5 Student Semi-Finalists will be selected and each awarded a one time cash value of $750.

The total value of all cash prizes will not exceed $23,750.

In addition to cash value awarded, Each finalists will be prominently featured in our BritannicaLearn.com website. They will also be announced through multiple promotional outlets including press releases and potential events.


SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

These are the traits that will help win an award:

Impact Making: How did the nominee’s work make an impact on your classroom, students, school and/or community.

Community Building: How did the nominee extend into the community, how did it change perceptions among community members.

Problem Solving: How did the nominee exemplify solving a problem different level of understanding around your problem, how did it encourage a hard-to-have conversation.

Foster Strong Relationships: How did the nominee demonstrate leadership in and out of the classroom, with the ability to foster strong relationships.

Narrative/Questionnaire Responses

  1. Tell us more about yourself! (For educators only) What inspired you to become an educator? (For students only) What are you most excited about in your academic future? Please limit to 500 words or less.
  2. Tell us why you believe you should be awarded Britannica’s first inaugural StandOut Award? Provide details about a program, activity, or action that has made an impact or changed perceptions in your community. Tell us how you solved a problem or fostered space for a challenging conversation? How did you show leadership and the ability to foster strong relationships in and out of the classroom. Please limit to 500 words or less.
  3. We believe no matter the size of the act, it has the ability to potentially make big impact. We’d love to know about how your action may have contributed or helped to solve a problem facing your school or community?  Did it provide a different level of understanding around the problem, did it encourage a hard-to-have conversation? Was there a result to the conversation?  Did your action demonstrate leadership in and out of the classroom? Please limit to 800 words or less.

Students and educators must provide at least one supporting document. Please provide supporting documentation that illustrates how your actions, program or initiative have made an impact on the community or classroom.

For educators: A career summary would also be valuable.

Students and educators must provide at least one reference document. This can be from principal, teachers or educators, students, community leaders who can offer perspective about you and your actions.

We’d love to get to know you better. Please provide a video introducing yourself and tell us about your amazing actions. Please provide a video under 10 minutes.


OTHER TERMS GOVERNING THE AWARDS:

By submitting your email, the nominee will be entered to win and you will automatically be subscribed to receive deals and updates from Sponsor via email. Subsequent attempts made by the same individual to submit multiple entries by using multiple accounts or otherwise may result in disqualification of the entrant

Only one submission submitted during the Awards Period will be eligible for entry into the Awards. No other methods of entry will be accepted. All entries become the property of Sponsor and will not be returned. Entries are limited to individuals only; commercial enterprises and business entities are not eligible. Use of a false account will disqualify an entry. Sponsor is not responsible for entries not received due to difficulty accessing the internet, service outage or delays, computer difficulties and other technological problems.

Entries are subject to any applicable restrictions or eligibility requirements listed herein. Entries will be deemed to have been made by the authorized account holder of the email or telephone phone number submitted at the time of entry and qualification. Multiple participants are not permitted to share the same email address. Should multiple users of the same e-mail account or mobile phone number, as applicable, enter the Awards and a dispute thereafter arises regarding the identity of the entrant, the Authorized Account Holder of said e-mail account or mobile phone account at the time of entry will be considered the entrant. “Authorized Account Holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned an e-mail address or mobile phone number by an Internet access provider, on-line service provider, telephone service provider or other organization which is responsible for assigned e-mail addresses, phone numbers or the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address. Proof of submission of an entry shall not be deemed proof of receipt by the website administrator for online entries. When applicable, the website administrator’s computer will be deemed the official time keeping device for the Awards. Entries will be disqualified if found to be incomplete and/or if Sponsor determines, in its sole discretion, that multiple entries were submitted by the same entrant in violation of the Awards Rules.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: BY ENTERING THE AWARDS, ENTRANTS, ON BEHALF OF THEMSELVES AND THEIR HEIRS, EXECUTORS, ASSIGNS AND REPRESENTATIVES, RELEASE AND HOLD THE SPONSOR ITS PARENT COMPANIES, SUBSIDIARIES, AFFILIATED COMPANIES, UNITS AND DIVISIONS, AND THE CURRENT AND FORMER OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SHAREHOLDERS, AGENTS, SUCCESSORS AND ASSIGNS OF EACH OF THE FOREGOING, AND ALL THOSE ACTING UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE FOREGOING, OR ANY OF THEM (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ADVERTISING AND PROMOTIONAL AGENCIES AND PRIZE SUPPLIERS) (EACH A “RELEASED PARTY”), HARMLESS FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, ACTIONS, INJURY, LOSS, DAMAGES, LIABILITIES AND OBLIGATIONS OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER (COLLECTIVELY, THE “CLAIMS”) WHETHER KNOWN OR UNKNOWN, SUSPECTED OR UNSUSPECTED, WHICH ENTRANT EVER HAD, NOW HAVE, OR HEREAFTER CAN, SHALL OR MAY HAVE, AGAINST THE RELEASED PARTIES (OR ANY OF THEM), INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, CLAIMS ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE Awards OR ENTRANT’S PARTICIPATION IN THE AWARDS (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, CLAIMS FOR LIBEL, DEFAMATION, INVASION OF PRIVACY, VIOLATION OF THE RIGHT OF PUBLICITY, COMMERCIAL APPROPRIATION OF NAME AND LIKENESS, INFRINGEMENT OF COPYRIGHT OR VIOLATION OF ANY OTHER PERSONAL OR PROPRIETARY RIGHT), AND THE RECEIPT, OWNERSHIP, USE, MISUSE, TRANSFER, SALE OR OTHER DISPOSITION OF THE PRIZE (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, CLAIMS FOR PERSONAL INJURY, DEATH, AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE). All matters relating to the interpretation and application of these Awards Rules shall be decided by Sponsor in its sole discretion.

DISPUTES: If, for any reason (including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the Sponsor which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Awards), the Awards is not capable of being conducted as described in these Awards Rules, Sponsor shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Awards. The Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. The Sponsor is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers, providers, computer equipment, software, or failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by Sponsor on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or any combination thereof, including, without limitation, any injury or damage to any entrant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participating or downloading any materials in this Awards. Because of the unique nature and scope of the Awards, Sponsor reserves the right, in addition to those other rights reserved herein, to modify any date(s) or deadline(s) set forth in these Awards Rules or otherwise governing the Awards, or to cancel the Awards in their entirety, and any such changes will be posted here in the Awards Rules. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Awards may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages to the fullest extent permitted by law. Sponsor’s failure to enforce any term of these Awards Rules shall not constitute a waiver of any provision.

As a condition of participating in the Awards, entrant agrees that any and all disputes that cannot be resolved between entrant and Sponsor, and causes of action arising out of or connected with the Awards or these Awards Rules, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, exclusively before a court of competent jurisdiction located in Chicago, Illinois, and entrant irrevocably consents to the jurisdiction of the federal and state courts located in Chicago, Illinois with respect to any such dispute, cause of action, or other matter. All disputes will be governed and controlled by the laws of the State of Illinois (without regard for its conflicts-of-laws principles). Further, in any such dispute, under no circumstances will entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and hereby irrevocably waives all rights to claim, punitive, incidental, or consequential damages, or any other damages, including attorneys’ fees, other than entrant’s actual out-of-pocket expenses (i.e., costs incurred directly in connection with entrant’s participation in the Awards), and entrant further irrevocably waives all rights to have damages multiplied or increased, if any.

EACH PARTY EXPRESSLY WAIVES ANY RIGHT TO A TRIAL BY JURY. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply.
