Britannica ImageQuest is changing the way that students interact with the world and with history. Now, with nearly 3.1 million rights-cleared images from 62 leading collections available in eight languages, ImageQuest is setting the bar for image searching.
1. Make History Come Alive.
Discover civil rights movements, archaeological finds, and leaders who have changed the world in a constantly updated database. Just this week, ImageQuest added over 15,000 images from Gado Images and Werner Forman Archives. Gado Images is known for its diverse, historic, medical, and civil rights images. Werner Forman Archives is known for its archaeology and fine arts images.
2. Uncover New Subject Areas.
Explore science and medicine in the newly updated Science Photo Library, which now includes over 40,000 images. Study medical fields and conditions, scientific advancements, animal and plant species, and chemical reactions. Images can bring places, subjects, and vocational fields that may have once been unreachable straight to your fingertips.
3. Use Images as Primary Sources.
Using primary source images is an effective way to explore history. It makes history relevant and engaging. In our latest blog series we explored women’s movements throughout the 20th century in a series of photographs. Check it out and try some of these activities with your students.
4. Explore in Your Native Language.
ImageQuest is now available in Arabic, along with English, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish, and Welsh! Explore image metadata in the language of your choice.
5. Use K-12 Activities.
Visit our Resources section and download seven image-inspired activities organized for grades K-12. Students will use images to extend their understanding of subjects they are studying in class, to inspire a discussion, to create visual glossaries, to facilitate group writing activities, and more.
Using images is a great way to differentiate lessons for all types of learners and to personalize various subject areas, historic events, and places around the world.
