Overview: Students will analyze different content sources within the pack (primary source, image, article) to determine which details are emphasized in each account.
Suggested Resource:
• LaunchPacks: Social Studies The Formation of NATO for Grades 9-12
Strategy: Analyze and Compare Sources
Activity: Use The Formation of NATO pack. Ask students to choose two to three different content sources in the pack. Have students respond to details found in each of the sources by using the annotation tools. Ask them to analyze and compare the sources using the suggested questions as a guide.
Suggested Questions:
• What was the general purpose for starting NATO?
• What are some reasons that countries would want to join NATO? Would NOT want to join NATO?
Possible Extension: Have students represent each of the original country members of NATO. Have the students conduct additional research on their motives and role in joining NATO.
