Professional Learning

Workshops for Early Elementary Education

Transform your early elementary teaching with our focused workshops, designed to deepen understanding and enhance practical skills. Each session offers a unique exploration into essential aspects of early learning to equip teachers with targeted strategies to enrich your educational approach.

As children develop language and discover the world around them, letter/sound recognition, vocabulary, and book and print awareness begins. As early learners begin to experience steps to literacy, the acquisition of phonemic awareness arises. This 4 part workshop will explore an explicit and systematic approach to literacy through the hierarchy supported by the science of reading. Join us as we discover age-appropriate approaches to listening comprehension, phonemic awareness, vocabulary acquisition, letter and sound recognition, phonics and spelling, reading comprehension and text fluency. During this workshop, we will explore the hierarchy and create relevant, hands-on interactions to take back into your early childhood classroom.

Early Learning

As children play and explore, they develop an understanding of the world around them. The early learning environment provides opportunities for children to engage in activities, explore materials, and make connections through interactions with peers and adults. Building nonfiction reading and images into those experiences foster critical thinking and information-gathering skills, vocabulary acquisition, and making real-world connections clear. In this workshop, we’ll unpack how and when to incorporate nonfiction text and media into both child-initiated and teacher-initiated activities and explore how engaging in nonfiction will lead to active child-led investigations into the world around them.

Integrating Nonfiction into Play

Research shows that early vocabulary acquisition is directly linked to academic and reading success in elementary school. Young children acquire well-developed vocabulary from experiences with adults that involve meaningful exposure to a variety of words in context, over time. In this workshop, we’ll dive into the relationship between early vocabulary acquisition and life-long literacy and understand the best practices for encouraging language use and development across the day.
