Discovery Schools, a high-performing Academy, and a top Microsoft Global Showcase Trust in the UK, faced the complex task of providing a ‘reading-rich’ curriculum that catered to a diverse student body. Teachers needed a way to deliver high-quality, non-fiction content that remained accessible to all students, regardless of their reading level, Special Educational Needs (SEN), or English as an Additional Language (EAL) status.

The primary hurdles included:

  • Differentiation: Finding time to manually adapt complex texts for various reading abilities.
  • Engagement: Moving beyond static worksheets to dynamic, cross-curricular resources.
  • Assessment: Effectively tracking reading progress and identifying specific vocabulary gaps in real-time.

Britannica School is a first-class solution for Immersive and Accelerated Reader tools that are free to use within the Microsoft suite. By integrating Britannica Education with Microsoft Tools (such as Reading Progress), Discovery Trust created a streamlined ecosystem for literacy.

This digital transformation focused on three key areas:

  • Levelled Content: Teachers utilised Britannica’s ability to adapt the same high-quality article across three different reading levels, ensuring every child could access the same core knowledge independently.
  • Interactive Support: Students leveraged built-in tools like the double-click dictionary, the translation tool covering over 100+ languages, and the read-aloud function to support SEN and EAL learners.
  • System Integration: Teachers exported age appropriate Britannica content directly into Microsoft Reading Progress, allowing students to practice fluency while receiving instant feedback on pronunciation and ‘tricky words’.

‘Being able to integrate Britannica into the platform is all helping us to improve outcomes for reading and also providing children with, what we know are, high-quality texts.’

David Briggs, Head of Primary | Discovery Schools Trust

The implementation of Britannica Education’s classroom solutions has significantly shifted the classroom dynamic for both staff and pupils at Discovery Trust:

  • For Students – Pupils are now able to self-assess their reading, improving their confidence with complex vocabulary. The ability to ‘hear’ and ‘see’ words simultaneously has also bridged the gap for struggling readers.
  • For Teachers – The integration acts as a major time saver. By providing pre-vetted and copyright free material updated every 20 minutes, Britannica allows teachers to make quick links to current learning topics.
  • For Parents – The data generated through these tools allows parents to see exactly where reading gaps exist, enabling them to provide targeted support at home.
